Far too often I found myself waking up and turning straight to my social media feeds to start my day, something “entrepreneur” and “spiritual” Twitter advise not to do. I’ve also watched several motivational videos that advised waking up and smiling or just thanking God for another day, which is something I sometimes struggled with but felt could have some real benefits. What I do now is somewhat of a combination of all of these things, and it has allowed me to not only start my day on a high note but also find the positive in any negative that tries to come my way throughout the day.
Stretching is good for the soul.
I’ve always liked the idea of yoga but finding and paying for classes wasn’t my cup of tea (I was really just too lazy), and being consistent with finding videos on YouTube to do in the comfort of my home proved to be a challenge. I recently started experiencing the worst back pains of my life and even my doctor said I need to stretch, so I was back knocking on the yogi’s door. I saw how good my body felt after even a quick yoga session, and as cliche as it sounds it centered me, so I knew I had to stick with this. I finally decided to get up at least 4 days a week and find a morning yoga routine on YT and it was one of the best decisions I’ve made for myself. You don’t have to put on the cutest sports bra and tights and drag your aching body and yoga mat to the most popular yoga studio in the city to get in a good stretch. You can literally plop on a mat in your pj’s and give your body the gift of a good stretch. It’ll thank you for the rest of the day.
The miracle of meditation.
Anybody who knows me knows my mind and mouth go a mile a minute so quieting my mind was an art form I never imagined myself mastering. However, I did some research on meditation, how it’s supposed to work and the best way to practice, and now it is something that brings so much relief and peace to my mornings. I stopped thinking so hard about the “right” way to do it and remembering all of the terms, names, etc. and I just started listening to my breath, saying affirmations, manifesting the life I want, and speaking to God. I’m not perfect at it and I don’t aim to be, but I feel so at ease and rejuvenated when I set aside the time to be still, be quiet, and be grateful for the day ahead of me. This has helped me to remain calm in stressful situations, breathe through any pain, and turn to prayer when I am confused and/or lost. If you can find some quiet time to yourself I recommend incorporating meditation into your morning routine and just start with a mantra or positive affirmations.
Put good in. Get good out.
The final step that helps me jumpstart my day is a healthy meal. I have started my fitness journey (that’s a story for another post) and I have been more focused on what I put into my body. I’m currently doing intermittent fasting, so I don’t eat my first meal until 11 a.m. but I still try to start my day with water, green tea and coffee. I didn’t want to believe it but water really is the KEY to weight loss and clearer skin your body will definitely thank you. When I do break fast I typically like to have something like a smoothie bowl (my new favorite thing), oatmeal, or eggs and a protein. I won’t sit here and act like I eat perfect, I literally had a milkshake last night, but I am more attentive and starting my day with a light, but filling, meal has changed how I feel throughout the day and typically leads to better meal choices throughout the day.
Every morning won’t be beautiful and some days you simply will not feel like it, but making the conscious effort to at least have three to four days of self-care in the morning will help you more than you know. I know everyone has these glorious morning routines and they make it look so easy, but if you incorporate these small and easy steps your body will get accustomed and thank you. Remember, you are the most important thing in your life and you have to take care of YOU. You can’t pour from an empty cup, so take some time for yourself and put some thought into how you start your day so that you can continue to be good to others.
Let me know in the comments some of your favorite morning routines I’m always looking for more ways to create better days!
Bye for now!
